NEW NKULA A SWITCHYARD STARTS TRANSMITTING POWER

A newly-reconstructed switch-yard at the soon-to-be commissioned Nkula A Hydro-power Plant (HPP) is now transmitting power from Nkula B and Tedzani One Hydropower Stations to Lilongwe and Blantyre, thanks to the multimillion dollar Nkula A rehabilitation project funded by the $350.7 million Malawi Compact. The state-of-the-art switch yard was energized on June 10, 2018 and is transmitting power at 66,000 volts to Lilongwe and Blantyre. Every equipment installed at the computerized switchyard such as the switchgear and step-up transformers is completely new. The modernization of this switchyard, among others, is expected to improve power transmission efficiency and reduce outages previously caused by the then aging and obsolete switchyard.
