NEW SWITCH-YARD CONSTRUCTION WORKS START AT NKULA A

Preparatory works for the new switch-yard have now commenced at Nkula A Hydro-power Plant (HPP).The commencement of the reconstruction works follows the dismantling and removal of an old 66 kV switch-yard. It is expected that a new state-of-the art Switchgear and new step-up transformers will be installed at the new switch-yard. Meanwhile, contractors, Andritz Hydro of Austria and Mota Engil of Portugal, have completed both leveling and surveying works at the switch-yard but reinforcement assembly with the concurrent earthing of the foundations is still in progress. Nkula HPP, with current capacity of 24 Megawatts, was commissioned in 1966 and no major repairs have been made to the aging plant since then. MCA-Malawi is implementing the rehabilitation project of Nkula A as part of the $350.7 million MCC power sector grant to Malawi Government.
