NKULA A REHAB GETS BOOST AS NEW TURBINE IS INSTALLED

Contractors Andritz Hydro and Mota Engil, continue to make headway in the refurbishment works at Nkula A Hydro-Power Plant (HPP).

Todate, most obsolete equipment inside the Power House, for example, is now replaced with new state-of-the-art machinery.

One of the latest achievement and boost to the Nkula A rehabilitation project is the installation of a new Turbine on Unit number 1 Runner inside the Power House.

The entire scope of work at the project site includes modernization of Nkula A intake and draft tube gates, penstocks, installation of new turbine runners and non-rotating turbine components, complete new generators, mechanical and electrical auxiliary systems, as well as the installation of a new high-voltage hybrid switch gear.

These works are part of rehabilitating and upgrading the Nkula A. The project is funded by Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States of America (USA) foreign aid agency, under the $350.7 million Malawi Compact aimed at reducing poverty through economic growth in Malawi.

Commissioned in 1966, Nkula A HPP was the first hydropower station in Malawi.

However, due to its archaic nature, the hydropower plant has experienced numerous forced outages over the years, hence necessitating a complete major overhaul in order for the country to achieve a stable power supply.
