CONSTRUCTION WORKS FOR THYOLO A & B SUBSTATIONS REGISTER PROGRESS

To improve power supply in Thyolo District, one of Malawi’s leading producer of Tea, Malawi Government with funding from Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), through Millennium Challenge Account Malawi (MCA-Malawi), is expanding and rehabilitating the existing two 33/11 kilo-volts (kV) distribution power substations in the District. The two substations are fondly dubbed Thyolo A and Thyolo B. To date, all construction works at the two sites have registered remarkable progress. Once construction works complete, these substations are expected to improve the electricity distribution system, hence making power reliable in the district. The substations will also help meet daily growing demand for electricity, as more companies come on board to open tea processing plants in the district. The pictures below depict upgrading works in progress for the two substations. To be specific, the scope of works at Thyolo A focuses on modernizing the substation; replacing the old switchgear as well as upgrading the existing 7.5 Mega Volt Amp (MVA) transformer to 10.0MVA. On one hand, works on Thyolo B are hinging on replacing all switchgear equipment including construction of new switchgear control building.
