LATEST ON NKULA A REFURBISHMENT

Refurbishment works of Nkula A Hydropower Station continue to intensify at the site. To date, the old switchyard has now been completely dismantled and removed and preparatory works to reconstruct a new switchyard are underway. The construction of two coffer dams (intake dam and outlet dam) are also progressing well at the power plant. Contractors, Andritz and Mota Engil, are also busy removing equipment for Units 1, 2 and 3 and the obsolete equipment is being replaced with new units, each producing 12 Megawatts, instead of the current 8 Megawatts capacity for each unit. Actual progress is now pegged at 63.7 percent and works are expected to be completed in June 2018, according to MCA-Malawi’s Infrastructure Development Project (IDP) Directorate. All these refurbishment works are part of the Infrastructure Development component of the United States of America (USA) $350.7 million power sector grant to the Malawi Government, signed in September 2013.The following pictorial focus depicts the updated work in progress at Nkula A:
